Coach Derr has been at the helm of Berwick Academy’s Girls Varsity Soccer Team for over a decade, guiding the team from a modest average of three wins per season to a powerhouse that consistently contends for EIL and NEPSAC titles, now averaging almost twelve wins each season. His impact was immediate when he took over in 2011, achieving an 11-4-2 record in his second year, narrowly missing a spot in the NEPSAC Class C tournament. By 2014, he led the Bulldogs to their first-ever NEPSAC appearance, pushing the number one seed to penalty kicks in a thrilling match.
Before joining Berwick, Coach Derr built his coaching expertise with several prestigious programs, including Seacoast United (ME and NH), Highland Futbol Club (NC), Northfield Mount Hermon School (MA), Oyster River High School (NH), SoccerPlus (CT), and the University of New England (ME). He holds a USSF C license, an NSCAA Advanced National Diploma, and an NSCAA Level 3 Goalkeeping Diploma. His extensive coaching background has allowed him to bring a wealth of knowledge and skill development to Berwick’s soccer program, helping his players reach their full potential both on and off the field.
As a player, Coach Derr grew up in Connecticut, competing for the Olympic Development Program and South Central Premier, before transitioning into coaching. His experience as a student-athlete shaped his understanding of the game and his approach to building strong, cohesive teams.
Coach Derr’s passion for the sport and commitment to his players extends beyond the field. His coaching philosophy centers on truly knowing and supporting his players both in the classroom and on the pitch. As a math teacher in Berwick’s Upper School and former Associate Athletic Director, he emphasizes hard work, giving your all, and making the most of every opportunity, knowing how quickly time flies by.
One of his proudest coaching moments was hosting the first-ever NEPSAC playoff game in program history, with fans packed around the turf field to cheer on the team. His energy and dedication to providing a competitive yet supportive environment are a cornerstone of his coaching style.
Through his leadership, Coach Derr has built a program that not only thrives on the field but also emphasizes personal growth, teamwork, and perseverance, shaping the next generation of confident and driven athletes.
