Academic Support

Our Approach

At Berwick Academy, our Academic Support program is designed to cultivate essential academic skills and habits of mind. Through personalized guidance from the dedicated Academic Support Coordinator in each division, students develop resilience, sharpen metacognitive awareness, and hone self-advocacy skills. By equipping students with the tools to navigate challenges and identify available resources, we foster a culture of growth, balance, and achievement.

Lower School Academic Support: Empowering Every Student’s Journey

Academic Support at the Lower School uses a whole-child approach by identifying academic barriers or social-emotional needs and working with families and teachers to promote and monitor academic progress. The Academic Support Coordinator facilitates screenings and developmentally appropriate Executive Functioning skills for all students.

Middle School Academic Support: Nurturing Growth

Academic Support at the Middle School is designed to support all students with developing academic skills and metacognitive awareness. Students are given a planner to be utilized as a common practice across all content areas. In 6th grade, a Study Skills course deepens this work through helping students understand themselves as learners and practice Executive Functioning skills. The Academic Support Coordinator also supports teachers with implementing classroom strategies to help all students.

Upper School Academic Support: The Path to Success

Our Academic Support program in the Upper School is dedicated to equipping students with the tools they need to thrive independently. Through specialized courses like our 9th-grade Foundations course, students develop advanced Executive Functioning and metacognitive skills, empowering them to advocate for themselves confidently. Our Academic Support Coordinator works collaboratively with teachers to ensure accommodations are implemented, fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment where students can reach their full potential.

Neurodiverse Students

It is the intention of Berwick Academy to support all students in a professional and appropriate manner. Neurodiverse students, who are otherwise qualified for admission to Berwick Academy, will be supported based on documentation that outlines specific diagnoses. The Academic Support Coordinator will then create a Learning Profile that identifies the appropriate strategies and accommodations considered reasonable in this educational setting. Documentation should be shared during the enrollment process with the divisional Academic Support Coordinator.
