Leadership

A Letter from the Head of School

It is a true privilege to join this exceptional community as Berwick Academy’s 55th Head of School. Whether you are visiting our website for the first time or are already part of the Berwick family, I’m honored to welcome you to a school that is deeply committed to academic excellence, meaningful relationships, and a strong sense of purpose.

At Berwick Academy, we believe in the transformative power of education. Our mission to promote virtue and useful knowledge resonates throughout every corner of campus—from the joy of discovery in our Lower School classrooms to the powerful intellectual engagement in our Upper School classrooms. Our students are curious, compassionate, and courageous learners who are encouraged to be themselves, challenge ideas, and try new things.

With a unique Pre-K through Grade 12 model, Berwick offers students the opportunity to grow in an environment where they are known and supported every step of the way. As someone who has spent more than 25 years in education—including leadership and teaching roles across the entire PK-12 span—I’m inspired by the way Berwick brings together students of all ages to form one vibrant and inclusive community.

Our dedicated faculty and staff are the heart of the Hilltop. Their passion for teaching, deep care for students, and commitment to innovation create a learning environment where young people thrive. From experiential learning to character education to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion efforts, we provide students with the tools they need to think critically, act ethically, and lead boldly.

Berwick is a place where it’s cool to be smart, cool to be yourself, and cool to try. You’ll see that energy reflected in our classrooms, on our athletic fields and stages, and throughout our 80-acre campus. This is a school that values tradition while embracing change, a place that honors each student’s journey while preparing them for a future of possibility.

As you explore our website, I hope you get a sense of the warmth, vision, and ambition that make Berwick so special. I invite you to visit campus and experience our community firsthand. You’ll find a school that is as joyful as it is purposeful—and a place where your child can thrive.

Thank you for your interest in Berwick Academy. I look forward to the opportunity to connect with you.

Sincerely,
Dr. Scott Erickson

  • About the Board

The Berwick Board of Trustees is currently comprised of 21 members of the community who serve without compensation. There are two ex-officio seats on the Board of Trustees: the president of the Alumni Advisory Board and the president of the Berwick Parent Community (BPC). The Board of Trustees at Berwick, as is the case with similar nonprofit institutions, has three fundamental roles:

    1) To ensure that the mission of the school is being delivered and supported fully
    2) To protect and support the long-term financial viability of the school
    3) To hire and evaluate the Board’s singular employee, the Head of School. No individual Board member is invested with authority to act independently; all decisions regarding policy are voted on by the Board as a whole.

The Board of Trustees is responsible for the School’s adherence to its mission, the monitoring of its financial wellbeing, and the implementation of the strategic plan. The Board meets four times a year and has the following Standing Committees: Audit, Building and Grounds, Campaign, Committee on Trustees, Executive, Finance/Investment, Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI), and Strategic Initiatives. Board members sit on one or more of these committees.
