The physical education program is based on a well-rounded series of units from Pre-Kindergarten through fourth grade.
In physical education we educate the child in the cognitive, the affective, and the psychomotor domains. Teaching motor skills, cognitive concepts and social skills are the foundation of our Wellness and Physical Education class. We incorporate academic content (literacy & numeracy) into our lessons to bolster student learning.
Physical education in the Lower School plays an important role in the development of the whole child. This program nurtures a joyful confidence in moving and a healthy attitude towards physical activity and sports participation. It encourages and prepares students to participate and benefit from a lifetime of physical activity. The students explore movement concepts, body awareness, and relationships with others in the early elementary years. Students learn to work together in small-sided, skill-oriented games which demand respect, cooperation, and teamwork. With developmentally appropriate teaching styles and tasks, students develop important fundamental movement skills. These skills are used as building blocks to develop more advanced and dynamic skills within individual and team participation. The ultimate goal is to develop a confident, healthy, and skillful child in the realm of physical movement and fitness.
ACES
ACES (All Children Exercising Simultaneously) is a national event that occurs annually in May. Berwick Academy has adopted the event as a monthly physical education program for our Lower School students. During ACES, the children gather in our athletic center and participate in exercises led by Physical Education teacher Marilena Sanborn. The children look forward to this event every month; it is always a very popular day in the Lower School! Check out the video from one of our ACES events!
