Coach Kevin Clough has an extensive and diverse athletic background, having competed in wrestling and football in high school and later picking up lacrosse and fencing in college. His passion for lacrosse began when his daughter started playing in the 4th grade, which led him to dive deep into the sport as a coach and advocate.
Kevin's coaching experience spans from grassroots youth programs to collegiate teams. He founded the Marshwood K-2 lacrosse program to help grow the sport at the local level and has since coached at every age group, from youth teams to NCAA Division III. His coaching journey includes time with Marshwood Youth Lacrosse, York Middle School, Noble High School, and Saint Joseph's College, where he was the Head Coach for the Women’s Intercollegiate Club Lacrosse team and an Assistant Coach for the NCAA Women’s Lacrosse team. Under his leadership, the Saint Joseph’s College team achieved a remarkable 20-0 season and earned an NCAA berth.
In addition to lacrosse, Coach Clough has a background in fencing. He competed on a small but highly competitive college club team and went on to win the Northeast Division Men’s Foil High Points Championship in 1996. He had the opportunity to compete against Olympians and national team members, gaining invaluable experience in the sport.
Coaching Philosophy:
“At the high school level, there’s still a lot of solid, fundamental lacrosse that we can focus on. Even at the college level, I saw athletic players on good teams with poor fundamentals. They succeeded due to determination and athleticism, but what if their coaches had taken the time to tighten their fundamentals? This is low-hanging but overlooked fruit. I encourage players to aim for college-level play, whether on a varsity team or a club team, as it is inherently good for the student-athlete.”
Favorite Coaching Moment:
“Coaching an 8th grade town team that was facing the one team that had beaten them for years. With a heartfelt pep talk, I saw a shift in my players’ attitudes and confidence. We led from the start and ultimately defeated our biggest rival.”
Sports Hero:
Joe Pechinsky, a World War II veteran and survivor of the Pearl Harbor attack, who became a legendary fencing coach in Massachusetts. Despite his lack of formal fencing background, he produced multiple Olympians out of the Tanner City Fencing Club. His audacity and commitment to the sport made a lasting impression on Kevin.
Personal Mantra:
“Play at least one other sport in the off-season. You will love your primary sport much more when you have another athletic outlet.”
