The Berwick Academy boys varsity ice hockey team hosted Hebron Academy on Wednesday, January 26, 2022.
The Bulldogs took a quick lead in the first period. Junior Josh Felton did a nice job preventing the puck from crossing the blue line, then sent it up to senior Liam Martin to sneak one by the goalie.
Unfortunately, things went south from here for Berwick. Hebron strung together five consecutive goals, giving them a 5-1 lead heading into the third period.
After re-convening in the locker room, the Bulldogs entered the third period on a mission. Just over a minute into the frame, freshman Ryan Dube scored off an assist from post-graduate Asa Forbes. Then, sophomore Justin Massa added two more goals. Mikey Mansfield assisted Massa’s first goal while Martin and Felton collaborated on the effort for the second.
Hebron did add one of its own late in the period, giving them a 6-4 lead. Berwick pulled senior goalie Jared Swisher from his place in net with two minutes left to add an extra skater to the ice. In the ensuing seconds, Berwick saw a potential fifth goal get negated due to a dislodged net, then proceeded to surrender an empty-net goal.
When all was said and done, Hebron emerged with a 7-4 win over the Bulldogs.
Berwick remains on its home ice later this week against Worcester. They’ll certainly look to play aggressively from the get-go in hopes of snapping their two-game losing streak.
