The Berwick Academy boys varsity hockey team hosted Pingree for their first home game of 2022 this past Friday. With a passionate student section on hand, the Bulldogs secured a 6-3 victory.
Just 12 sections into the first period, sophomore Justin Massa got the scoring started. His unassisted goal gave Berwick a 1-0 lead that it held for the remainder of the frame. The Bulldogs survived a penalty kill in the first period but also went 0-for-2 on power play opportunities.
Pingree tied the game at one apiece early in the second period, but this only fueled the Bulldogs. Senior Nick McSorley broke the tie with help from junior Josh Felton on the assist. Then, with time winding down in the frame, post-graduate Asa Forbes found the back of the net. His insurance goal was assisted by senior Jack Kenney.
Not content with one quick strike, Massa added a second goal just 24 seconds into the third period, giving Berwick a 4-1 lead. Pingree did mount a mini comeback effort with two goals of its own, but the Bulldogs simply distanced themselves once again as McSorley and Forbes each scored their second goals of the clash.
Senior Jared Swisher had a strong game in net, tallying 32 saves en route to Berwick’s 6-3 win at home.
