BERWICK MAKES IT TWO IN A ROW ON SATURDAY
The Berwick Academy boys varsity ice hockey team traveled north to Bridgton, Maine, for a clash against Bridgton Academy on Saturday afternoon. Although Bridgton had a much older team, the Bulldogs were persistent and emerged from the third period with a thrilling 6-3 victory.
Fresh off a three-goal win the night before, Berwick remained focused as it took the ice for the second time in 24 hours.
Fueled by a power play, senior Nick McSorley found the back of the net as Berwick took a 1-0 lead. He was assisted by junior Josh Felton and senior Asa Forbes. Less than two minutes later, freshman Ryan Dube extended the lead off an assist from junior Jack Dempsey. Berwick entered the first intermission with a 2-0 lead.
Bridgton notched an even-strength goal early in the second period, but Berwick simply responded with two more scores of its own. McSorley snuck one by the goalie for the second time (assisted by Felton and sophomore Justin Massa) while Massa scored off assists from Felton and Martin.
The Bulldogs remained aggressive even with a 4-1 lead. After getting the puck from Massa, McSorley scored once again, giving him a hat trick. The goal was also his fifth over the Bulldogs’ last two games. Later in the period, Massa scored his second goal of the game off of an assist from Asa Forbes. Bridgton would go on to score two more goals before the final horn, but it wasn’t enough to change the final outcome. Indeed, Berwick won by a score of 6-3 for the second consecutive day.
Senior goalie Jared Swisher had yet another solid effort, racking up 30 saves on 33 opportunities.
Currently riding a two-game winning streak, the Bulldogs hit the road for a clash against Brewster Academy on Monday evening.
