Just minutes after fall trimester grades closed on campus, the boys hockey team kicked off the winter season with an exhibition on the road against Pingree.
Berwick opened with two goals early in the first period off the sticks of Asa Forbes and Justin Massa. Pingree notched one of its own but the Bulldogs exited the period on top, 2-1.
The second period was shaky. Not only did Pingree tie the game, but they also took a 3-2 lead in the frame. Berwick was unable to find the net during this 18-minute stretch. Furthermore, Pingree added another goal early in the third period, going up by a score of 4-2.
Berwick was trailing, but they most certainly weren’t out of the game. The intensity remained high and the Bulldogs weren’t willing to let Pingree finish the game with a win and three unanswered goals.
Eli Chilicki helped turn things around with a pivotal goal midway through the third period, pulling Berwick within one. Fueled by motivation from Chilicki’s ability to find the back of the net, the Bulldogs continued to play aggressive. Massa scored moments later to tie the game, 4-4.
The clock eventually hit double zeroes and the Bulldogs’ first game of the 2021-22 season officially ended a tie.
Varsity’s first regular-season game is on Dec. 3, 2021, at 4:45 p.m. They’ll host Kents Hill in Dover.
