BULLDOGS’ EARLY SCORING NOT ENOUGH AGAINST MIDDLESEX

The Berwick Academy boys varsity hockey team hosted Middlesex School for a thrilling battle on Friday afternoon.

After coming off a difficult loss, the Bulldogs were energized and eager to bounce back against a strong Middlesex team. Indeed, Berwick struck first as senior Liam Martin found the net less than 10 minutes into the contest. His goal was assisted by junior Jake McGonagle and sophomore Justin Massa. Just six minutes later, the team extended its lead when Ian Kula handled a rebound and delivered it into the back of the net off assists from Martin and senior Asa Forbes.

Berwick survived two penalty kills in the opening period but was less successful in the second period. An early high-stick penalty led to Middlesex scoring its first goal of the game. They notched another goal in the waning minutes of period, tying the score at two apiece heading into the final intermission.

Middlesex tallied a go-ahead goal just 13 seconds into the third period and stood strong for the remainder of the contest. They preserved this one-goal lead, handing Berwick a 3-2 loss.

Senior goaltender Jared Swisher had a strong game in net, saving 42 of the 45 shots sent his way.

Although the outcome was disappointing, Friday’s game represented a positive step in the right direction for the Bulldogs. By striking early and never trailing by more than one goal against Middlesex, Berwick proved that it can hold its own against high-level competition.

The team’s next game is on Wednesday at 4:15 p.m. in Dover as they take on Brewster Academy.
