Catch up with Brooke and Heather in this edition of our Alumni Spotlight. From Berwick to the court room, Brooke and Heather talk about their accomplishments since graduation and advice they would give to our young alums.
What is your proudest accomplishment since leaving Berwick?
Brooke (B): My proudest accomplishment since leaving Berwick is obtaining my law degree and having the opportunity to practice law at Pastori | Krans in New Hampshire, the state in which I grew up.
When did you know you wanted to go back to school and start a career in law?
B: I wanted to pursue a career in law ever since my days at Berwick Academy. At Berwick, my teachers provided me with advice as to what classes would be helpful throughout my academic career to achieve my goal of getting into law school, and I was a member of Berwick Academy’s Mock Trial Team. At Trinity College, I studied a lot of the very same subjects my Berwick teachers suggested, and I was prepared once I joined the Mock Trial Team from my experience on the team at Berwick. After college, and after I was a corporate data analyst for a few years, I was ready to get back into the academic world and take my career to the next level by going to law school.
How did you find your current job at Pastori Krans and what has been your favorite part about working there?
Heather (H): My partner, Terri Pastori, and I founded Pastori | Krans, PLLC nearly 6 years ago. My favorite part of working here has been watching the firm expand and flourish, and knowing that I played a part in creating something tangible and real.
Note about Brooke finding her current job: About 4 years ago an attorney colleague from Wellesley, Massachusetts introduced me to Brooke, who was then a law student at Emory University School of Law. He made the connection because he knew Brooke was interested in working in family law in New Hampshire, and I was the only family law attorney he knew in New Hampshire. He did not know that I too went to Emory University School of Law. I immediately recognized that we had Emory Law in common, but it took a bit longer to realize that Brooke and I both grew up on the New Hampshire Seacoast, and in a real life “small world moment,” to realize that we are both proud Berwick Academy alumnae. (All these years later seeing the word “alumnae,” and hoping I am using it correctly still makes me recall beloved Berwick Latin teacher, Ms. Green). So, of course we had to hire her.
Even though I graduated from Berwick 21 years before Brooke, we had some of the same teachers. That goes for law school as well. I would be very surprised if there are any other Emory lawyers out there who also graduated from Berwick Academy – I think it’s just me and Brooke.
What is your fondest memory of your time at Berwick?
H: My fondest memory of Berwick is the senior lounge. It was so mysterious until I became a senior and was allowed to enter. As a twelfth grader, I loved spending time there between classes and during free periods – it was everything I had dreamed, with couches! It also helped bring a cohesiveness to the senior class experience that I still cherish.
B: There are so many memories that I treasure from my time at Berwick Academy. However, my fondest memory of Berwick Academy is morning assembly. It was truly special to begin each day with the entire Upper School, including faculty, and watch performances, hear announcements, and laugh with friends (especially during the Class of 2011’s spirit week performances). Morning assembly fostered that strong sense of community on the Hilltop.
What advice would you give to students and alumni looking to start a career in something they are passionate about?
H: Make strong personal connections everywhere you can (including during your time at Berwick) and know that a connection you make now can help springboard your career many years later in a way you could never have anticipated.
B: Pursue your passions. Do your research, talk to people that are where you want to be, and maybe even find a mentor. Then, take that information and turn it into a plan. When pursuing your passion, take advice from others but also, follow your instincts so that you are on a path that makes you happy.
