Boarding

Berwick Academy offers a family-style residential program for students entering Grades 9-12/PG who wish to experience life on the Hilltop. The residential program at Berwick allows students to immerse themselves in the community by forming deep relationships with peers and faculty that will endure long after their time at Berwick.

Small, Family-Style Living

Boarding students enjoy life in one of the most picturesque towns in New England, with convenient access to beaches and mountains as well as urban areas like Portsmouth, NH, Portland, ME, and Boston. Dormitories are intentionally small and familial, designed to feel like “home away from home.” Frequent family-style meals and a home-like environment allow students an opportunity to feel like they are part of a family.

Alumni frequently cite the relationships with faculty and staff as the defining feature of their boarding experience at Berwick. Berwick Academy is not a school where students only see their English teacher in class. Your math teacher might help run the pizza making contest on a Saturday night in the dorm; they might also be your soccer coach! Students are constantly surrounded by caring adults who check in with them beyond the classroom and get to know them as individuals.

  • Does Berwick Academy accept international students as boarders?

Yes! Berwick values the diverse perspective, culture, and experience of all students, including those joining us from other countries. International students are welcomed to campus from day one and the small dorm setting allows those students to immediately join a community and immerse themselves in everyday life on the Hilltop.

When school is not in session (i.e. Thanksgiving Break, Winter Break, Spring Break), we assist students in arranging transportation to/from airports and train stations. The following are within driving distance from campus: Portland International Jetport in Portland, ME (PWM) - 45 min drive; Boston-Logan Airport (BOS) in Boston, MA - 1hr15m drive; Manchester-Boston Regional Airport (MHT) in Manchester, NH - 1hr drive.

For additional questions and more information about Visas, I-20s, health insurance, establishing US bank accounts, etc. please see our International Student Checklist and Frequently Asked Questions.
  • Does Berwick offer 5-Day or 7-Day Boarding?

We consider all of our boarding students 7-Day boarders; however, students always have the option to have a 5-Day experience. Boarders can remain on campus over the weekend both from a convenience standpoint (i.e. a student who is also playing a sport that season and has a Saturday game) or just for the chance to participate in weekend activities with their residential community.

Berwick Academy does not have Saturday classes and teams have limited Saturday commitments, so students who wish to go home over the weekend are able to do so.
  • What differentiates the Berwick boarding experience?

Founded in 1791 as the first educational institution in the state of Maine, nestled within the beautiful "Seacoast" area, which offers students access to an array of opportunities within a short distance from campus–whether going into beautiful Portsmouth, NH for restaurants, shopping, or cultural events or enjoying the natural beauty of beaches, golf courses, or hikes in our local area.

Students live in smaller residential settings (12-14 students in a dorm) meant to feel more like "home." Smaller dorms create a comfortable place to recharge while being known and cared for by their community. Dorms include a kitchen/kitchenette, a common area with a TV and comfortable seating, laundry facilities, and a family-style dining area.

Our graduates matriculate to college with a unique sense of independence, maturity, and the ability to communicate and live alongside fellow students and adults.
  • What happens on weekends?

Many boarders choose to stay on campus in order to take part in weekend activity offerings. Every weekend is different, but there are always options! Recent activities include:
    • trip to Portsmouth for restaurants and shopping
    • hike up Mount Agamenticus
    • beach day at Long Sands Beach in York
    • apple picking at local farm
    • deep sea fishing excursion
