Graduate Teacher Training Program at Berwick Academy

Designed for aspiring Elementary, Middle and High School teachers
For over 200 years, Berwick Academy has pursued its mission of promoting “Virtue and Useful Knowledge” through a blend of strong academics, arts, and athletics. The Academy has been training future educators since 2006. Our interns have gone on to successful careers in public and independent schools throughout New England, and as far away as North Carolina and Hawaii.
Berwick Academy will continue its fine tradition of training aspiring teachers by joining Lesley University’s Collaborative Internship Program in 2014. This program is designed to offer a purposeful blend of hands-on teaching experiences and graduate courses. Leading to a Master’s of Education Degree, the Graduate Teacher Training Program connects theory with practice in a comprehensive manner. Interns in our field-based, non-licensure program work under the guidance of experienced and supportive Berwick Academy faculty mentors. They are engaged in the vibrant life of Berwick’s active campus and become an integral part of the school family during their year of study on the hilltop.
Graduate Teacher Training Program Format:
Lesley University School of Education offers students the opportunity to complete yearlong field placements while taking graduate education courses. The Graduate Teacher Training Program works on a set sequence of courses. Beginning in June, accepted students take courses at Lesley University in Cambridge, MA. In the fall semester, students begin their teaching internship at Berwick Academy, while taking graduate courses at both Berwick Academy and Lesley University. The program is completed in 14 months, beginning in the summer semester and finishing at the end of the following summer. The successful completion of the coursework and the teaching internships results in a Masters of Education Degree.
During the fall and spring semesters, Berwick Academy interns work under the guidance of experienced mentor teachers, learning and practicing the knowledge, skills, and dispositions essential for successful teaching. The mentor teachers, an on-campus program director, and course instructors work together to support each intern along his/her educational journey. Interns actively participate in all aspects of the Berwick Academy school community: working with students, developing curriculum, participating in parent-teacher conferences, coaching and joining in other school activities. Although this program does not lead to teacher certification, our interns gain a wealth of teaching experiences and are well prepared to teach at the completion of the program.
This collaborative program is designed for highly motivated, intellectually curious adults who want to participate in a comprehensive and enriching Graduate Teacher Training Program. Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree and a commitment to working in teams; prior experience working with children is preferred. Students currently in undergraduate school may apply to the program, but must have obtained their Bachelor’s degree by the time they begin the program. We encourage people of varying ages, experiences, and backgrounds to apply.
There is a two-part application to the Graduate Teacher Training Program. Part I consists of a completed application, including references, transcripts and an essay sent to Berwick Academy. All candidates are required to visit Berwick Academy for an interview and a campus tour. Upon receiving a preliminary acceptance from Berwick Academy, the application materials enter Part II of the process. At this point, the application materials are forwarded to Lesley University to be reviewed by the Admission Committee. A formal letter of admittance is issued once a student has been accepted by both institutions.
